Greater Accra DOVVSU records 1,011 domestic cases in 2011



240x mg afv2ylk8wr dovvsuAccra, Jan. 6, GNA – The Great Accra Regional Division of the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service, has recorded 6,580 domestic  crimes  last year.

     Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Bismark Agyapong, Deputy Coordinator of DOVVSU, in an interview with Ghana News Agency in Accra on Friday, said in 2010, 5,569 cases were reported to the unit  compared  to 6,580 cases in 2011, an increase of 1,011 cases.

    He explained that the increase in reported cases was due to awareness created among the people through  education and outreach campaigns in churches, schools and corporate institutions by DOVVSU, and sensitization of the public on domestic crime by the media and other stakeholders.

     DSP Agyapong said ‘People are now bold enough to report cases to the authorities’.

       He said the highest rate of crime recorded was assault, which was 2,700 cases, followed by 811 cases of threat or harm, 589 reports of offensive conduct, 509 cases of failure to supply basic life necessities, 388 of defilement cases , 295 cases of stealing and 144 rape cases.

    Others were abduction 126 cases, indecent assault, 91 cases, exposing child to harm, 50 cases, attempted rape, 19 cases, and attempted defilement, 10 cases, and seven cases of incest were recorded.
