Accra, Feb 2, GNA -The National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons on Thursday commended the Ghana Police Service for their professionalism and commitment to fight crime, proliferation of small arms and light weapons in Ghana.
A statement by the Commission and signed by Mr Jones Applerh, Acting Executive Secretary, also praised the service for promoting peace and security in the entire sub-region and specifically commended the Greater Accra Police Command for the timely apprehension of large cache of small arms and cartridges that were supposedly bound for Nigeria on January 10.
The statement said: “This action has also given an assurance to our citizenry, the neigbhouring countries, international and business community that the Ghana Police Service would not compromise on the security of Ghana and that of the region.”
The Commission noted that the act was a clear demonstration of police, civil community relations and expressed the hope that such relationship will be deepened to ensure security, conflict prevention and peace-building in the country and the sub-region as a whole.
The statement expressed the Commission’s renewed commitment to collaborate with the police and all security agencies to embark on several initiatives to prevent, combat and eradicate illicit trade in small arms and light weapons in the country.
