Bawku (U/E), Sept. 20, GNA – A  suspected notorious armed robber was at the weekend lynched by the Zemmasa community members near Bawku in the Upper East Region after he resisted arrest and shot at them.

The suspect, Ali Haruna, 25, has been on the Bawku police and the Zemmasa community wanted list for a long time and was spotted in the community with an AK 47 assault riffle.

Deputy Superintendant of Police (DSP) Mr Benjamin Ofori Acquah, the Crime Officer of the Bawku Divisional Police Command, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), said when the community members attempted to arrest him, he resisted the effort and opened fire on them until he ran out of ammunition.

He said when the community members realized that he had run out of ammunition, they pounced on him and beat him to death.

DSP Acquah said the suspected armed robber had been robbing traders and travelers of their monies and other valuable items in the area and was identified by some community members as one of the robbers who attacked traders from Burkina Faso at the Kulpelgu Forest Reserve near Bawku a few weeks ago.

DSP Acquah said the community members found a weapon in a bush nearby where the last robbery took place and suspected it was for one of the robbers who had been robbing the area so laid ambush till the owner arrived.

He said a few days later, they saw the suspect walk towards the weapon and this resulted in a hot chase leading to the altercation and resultant lynching.

DSP Acquah called on the community members to desist from instant justice and hand over any suspect to police as that would help the police in its investigation to track down more criminals.

He urged the community members to be each other’s keepers as that would help them to track down criminals in the area.
