Sackey wins Anim Memorial Cycling Race

Accra, Aug. 8, GNA—Isaac Sackey of Sky Cycling Club clocked 51.27 minutes to win the maiden Samuel Anim Memorial Cycling Race held in Accra on Saturday.

Accra, Aug. 8, GNA—Isaac Sackey of Sky Cycling Club clocked 51.27 minutes to win the maiden Samuel Anim Memorial Cycling Race held in Accra on Saturday.

     He was followed by Abdul Razak Umar with a time of 51.37 minutes whiles Frank Akuffo placed third with a time of 52.40 minutes.

     The champion received a magnificent trophy, an amount of GHC500.00 and products of Promasidor Ghana Limited.

     Abdul Umar had GHC300.00 whiles Akuffo received GHC200.00. The two also received products from Promasidor Ghana Limited.

    The 120-kilometre race, which started from the Accra Sports Stadium to Mamfe-Akuapem in the Eastern Region and back to Accra, was in memory of Samuel Anim, Captain of the National Cycling team who died through an accident last year.

      Anim was training at Mamfe-Akuapem for the All African Games scheduled for Brazzaville, Congo when he was knocked down by a vehicle.

      About 75 cyclists from across the country took part in the race, which was sponsored by Promasidor Ghana Limited and Royal Headlines Limited.

      Mr Mohammed Sahnoon, President of the Ghana Cycling Federation, described the late Anim as a man whose contribution made the Federation what it is today.

      He said Anim was selfless, disciplined and a courageous sportsman, who took his training seriously and had won many trophies for the nation.

      ‘’We therefore decided to organize this competition in his memory and I hope this competition is going to be an annual affair’ Mr Sahnoon added.

       Mr Alhassan Sodji, General Manager of Royal Headlines Limited said his company decided to partner the Federation to promote cycling in the country.

        He urged the youth to take active interest in the sport to stay healthy at all times.
