Use the activity method in teaching, Science and Mathematics teachers urged

Fijai (W/R), July 24, GNA – The Tutors of Science and Mathematics subjects particularly at the Basic and Junior High school level have been reminded on the need to focus on the activity method to increase interest in the subject.

The activity method helps the students to naturally explore and play around the teaching models in order to generate new ideas of finding solutions to societal and scientific problems.

Mr Kojo Prah, the Vice Principal of the Holy Child College of Education, said this at a day’s capacity building workshop for Mathematics and Science Teachers selected across the country.

The workshop sponsored by the Marshallan Relief and Development Services, was to improve teaching and learning of the subject.

Mr Prah said it is time teachers of the subject made it interesting by adopting the right approaches to the teaching of the subject adding that “the activity method is one good approach but you are not using it”.

The teachers were also taught the use of the right language that could make the learning of the subject more practical to students.

Mr Prah also called on teachers to end the habit of solving lottery puzzles, engaging in unnecessary conversations and the reading of funny materials during learning hours and rather participate in the learning process through proper supervision.

Mr Edward Prah, Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the MAREDES, said teachers in the subject area are being assisted with the requisite skills to help others in the remote areas.

Already, the project has distributed over 5000 mathematical instruments to such deprived communities across the country.

Mr Prah said the workshop has been instituted as a pilot project to help teachers grasp the methodologies and make good use of them to lift the image of the two subject areas.
