Accra, July 28, GNA – The Supreme Court on Thursday dismissed a suit filed by Dr Mark Assibey Yeboah member of Parliament (MP) for New Juabeng South praying the court to annul government’s contract with Karpowership..
The five member panel presided over by Justice Jones Dotse said by a unanimous decision the court had dismissed the case in its entirety.
The court however did not elaborate its reasons for the dismissal in open court but said that the reasons were in the full judgement to be filed with the Court registry, by close of Thursday.
The Member of Parliament filed the suit against the Attorney-General, Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and Ecobank at the Supreme Court for going ahead with the Karpowership agreement without recourse to Parliament since it was an international agreement.
Dr Assibey Yeboah was seeking the constitutionality of the Karpower agreement which will cost the taxpayer $100 million to enable the country to import’ 450 megawatts of power from Turkey to offset the current energy supply deficit.
Per the agreement, Karpowership was to build an emergency power barge for the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to ease the power challenges in the country.
