Tamale, July 28, GNA – The Northern Regional Secretariat of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) has presented relief items to officials of the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly (TaMA) for distribution to victims of the recent floods.
The items included 50 pieces of mattresses, 60 pieces of blankets, 200 pieces of mosquito nets, 10 cartons of mosquito coils, 50 pieces of plastic buckets, 20 pieces of plastic basins, 100 pieces of plastic cups, 200 pieces of plastic plates and four bales of used clothing.
Heavy rains experienced in the TaMA earlier this week resulted in flooding of parts of the metropolis including Sawaba, Gumani, Kukuo, Kunyevilla amongst others, led to the death of a woman and affected about 170 households.
Alhaji Mahama Abdulai Silimboma, Northern Regional Coordinator of NADMO, who presented the items to the officials of TaMA in Tamale for onward distribution to the affected residents, said his office was working to mobilize additional relief items for the victims.
Alhaji Silimboma said the rainstorm affected seven districts in the region adding NADMO would extend relief items to those districts to ameliorate the pain of the affected residents.
He said most of the disasters recorded in the region were man-made and urged all to respect environmental regulations to avoid such disasters.
Alhaji Hanan Gundadow, Chief Executive Officer of TaMA, who received the items, thanked NADMO for the gesture saying they would go a long way to ameliorate the pain of the affected residents.
Alhaji Gundadow tasked the Department of Feeder Roads in the TaMA to provide drains in some of the suburbs to avoid floods.
He also urged property developers to adhere to necessary guidelines when undertaking their projects to avoid disasters such as the recent floods.
