2016 Agotime Kente Festival Launch on Friday

Accra, July 21, GNA – The 2016 Kente Festival instituted by the chiefs and people of Agotime Traditional Area in the Volta region would be launched on Friday, July 22 at the Christ the King Hall, Cantonment Accra at 6 pm.

Accra, July 21, GNA – The 2016 Kente Festival instituted by the chiefs and people of Agotime Traditional Area in the Volta region would be launched on Friday, July 22 at the Christ the King Hall, Cantonment Accra at 6 pm.

The 21st edition is on the theme: “Projecting the Cultural Values of Kente for Unity and Development.”

A statement issued in Accra on Thursday July 21, 2016 by Mr. Bennet Nyasembi , secretary to this year’s festival planning committee said the launch would be under the auspices of Nene Nuer Keteku III, Konor of Agotime Traditional Area, Mr Eddie Akotey , MD of Edlorm Housing and Chairman of the 2016 Kente Festival Planning Committee as well as the Chiefs and People of Agotime, would like to extend a special invitation to you as a guest to the launch of the 21st edition of the annual Agotime Kente Festival.

Globally, Kente is regarded as one of the best hand woven textiles. It symbolizes the identity of the Ghanaian and evokes powerful emotions among the citizenry. Agotime have one of the highest concentration of weavers in West Africa and Kente weaving is a major source of livelihood amongst the people.

As part of measures to preserve the uniqueness of the cloth, “we the People of Agotime instituted the Kente Festival in 1995”, the statement said.

It had the objectives: to preserve and protect the cultural and aesthetic values of the Kente Cloth, project the various uses of the Kente Cloth through dresses, costumes and regalia, expose new techniques and innovations in the Kente Industry, attract Tourists to the Agotime

Traditional Area and unite the people for socio-economic development among other things.
