Starbow makes emergency landing, two injured during evacuation

Accra, Oct. 29, GNA-A Takoradi-bound aircraft of  Starbow Airlines,  has been forced to make an emergency landing at the Kotoka International Airport,  due to the loss of hydraulic pressure in its right undercarriage.

The pilot of the aircraft detected the loss 15 minutes into the journey,  and requested permission from the air traffic control to do an emergency landing. The aircraft carrying 56 passengers on board, as well as one infant, landed safely at the KIA.

The passengers, were however, traumatized,  and two of them sustained some injuries during the evacuation by getting of the slide in panic.

A statement issued by the airline and signed by Mr Archibald Kittoe, said Starbow Flight 124 was on its way to Takoradi when the incident occurred at 1600hrs.

“The incident occurred after take-off. The captain detected a technical problem which emanated as a result of a hydraulic system failure.       

The captain made the right decision in accordance with standard procedures,  and decided to return to base. The aircraft landed smoothly and during the taxiing phase to the airport stand, Fire Service personnel observed that some smoke were coming from the brakes which had heated as a result of the braking action and the high speed landing” it explained.

“The crew responded by ensuring that the passengers were quickly evacuated.

All the  passengers were evacuated safely in accordance with standard procedures.

It was unfortunate that two passengers experienced some minor injuries during the evacuation process.

The Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) is currently working together with Starbow to ascertain what went wrong,”  the statement concluded.

Starbow would like to take this opportunity to apologize to all its affected passengers on board,  and to assure the general public,  especially its cherished passengers, that  ‘as a company we will continue to strive for the highest compliance of strict airline security and safety measures at all times.’
