Accra, Aug. 20, GNA – The fate of the 2013 edition of the RLG Grand Prix hangs in a balance due to financial constraints.

The Grand Prix, the biggest event on the calendar of the Ghana Athletics Association (GAA), may for the first time not see the light of day as the national governing body struggles in search of funds to stage the event.

A source close to headline sponsors, RLG told GNA Sports the dealers in telecommunication products may not be able to partner with the organizers for this year’s meet.

After successfully organizing  the previous two editions in 2011 and 2012, the company is said to have communicated their intent to the GAA, a development that has thrown their plans into disarray.

The event was initially scheduled for July as part of preparations for the World Athletics Championships in Russia, but later frozen till after the global championship.

With the World Athletics Championship over, the GAA has yet to secure any funding for the event, putting the realization of the one-day championship fixed for the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi under the greatest of doubts.

The GAA  may call time on the championship with no major event on the calendar of the International Association of Athletic Federations (IAAF) at least for now.

This development will serve yet a big dent for a GAA, which have had their programmes curtailed by financial constraints.

Earlier in the year, Ghana failed to present a team for the African Youth Athletics Championship in Warri, Nigeria due to the unavailability of funds, whilst Janet Amponsah was the sole representative at the World Athletics Championship which ended in Moscow, Russia at the weekend.
