Kofi Portuphy elected NDC National Chairman


Kumasi, Dec. 21, GNA – The ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) on Sunday elected Mr. Kofi Portuphy as the new National Chairman of the party at its Eighth National Delegates’ Congress at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi.

Mr. Portuphy, who heads the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), polled 2,457 votes out of  3,302 total ballots cast to beat the incumbent, Dr. Kwabena  Adjei, who polled 316 votes, and Mr. Dan Abodakpi, a prominent member of the party, who polled 508 votes.

The keenly-contested election was supervised by the Electoral Commission (EC) and saw more than 3,500 delegates voting to elect national officers to steer the party’s affairs in the next four years.

In the Vice-Chairmanship race which saw 17 contestants vying for six positions, Mr. Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, Ms. Betty Mould-Iddrisu, Ms. Anita de-Soosoo, Alhaji Said Sinare, Mr. Harry Zakour and Lee Ocran were given the nod.

In the National Organizer race, Kofi Adams, the current Deputy-General Secretary had 2,543 votes to oust the incumbent, Mr. Yaw Boateng-Gyan, who polled 734 votes.

Mr. Johnson Asiedu-Nketiah, the incumbent General-Secretary, retained his position, polling 2,685 votes to beat his main contestant, Mr. Ishaq Farakhan, who had 606 votes.

The position of Deputy National Organizer was given to Messrs Joshua Akamba and Mahdi Jibril.

Other officers elected were Mr. Koku Anyidoho and George Lawson, who were both given the position of Deputy General Secretary, Mr. Solomon Nkansah, National Communications Officer, and Messrs Fred Agbenyo and Kwaku Boahen, both elected Deputy National Communications Officers.

 Mr. Abdallah Ahmed-Abdallah was elected National Treasurer, while Ms. Vida Addae was elected as his Deputy.
