Accra, Oct 3, GNA- Eighteen environmental companies received plaques of merit at the Ghana Green Awards for ensuring environmental sustainability and preservation activities at the corporate, enterprise, and socio-cultural levels.
The award is to encourage community and individual livelihood levels of contribution towards climate change mitigation efforts for the benefit of humankind and to work towards attaining a low carbon, resource efficient and socially inclusive Green Ghana.
Accra Compost and Recycling Plants, Black Star Energy, High Limit Group, Safisana, Suka Group, Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly and Conversation Alliance Institution, were among the recipients.
The Energy Commission, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Forestry Commission and the Graphic Communication Group received an honorary awards for their contribution towards a green environment.
Nana Kobina Nketia V, the Omanhene of Essikado, commended RICS Consult for organising the event that prompted citizens about the way of life and its adverse effects on environment.
Nana Nketia , also the patron of Ghana Green Awards, noted that green energy was divine and it was made a higher Science that integrated all the physical, mental and spiritual resources.
He said the colonial basis of the formal education received eroded the self-definition and distinctness as well as the characterisation, perception and management of the environment space.
Nana Nketia said the Energy Commission had commenced the National Rooftop Solar Programme to give out 500 watts solar panels to any individual or organisation who had all the other components detailed in a solar panel system setup ready for installation.
He called for a culture of proper waste management and the disposal and inculcation of the habit, which eschewed littering and the need to harness the possibilities of recycle and re-use.
“Going green means prioritising the environment, while visualising the next generation’s opportunities and an opportunity to invest more,” he stated.
Madam Abena Appiah, the event Coordinator of Ghana Green Awards and Expo, launched the second edition of the awards, saying the next edition would be competitive and urged companies to work hard to meet the challenge.
