Construction workers raises the alarm

Accra, Sept.1, GNA.-The Construction and Building Material Workers Union (CBMWU) of the TUC has raised the alarm that some personnel of the construction industry were not operating under safe conditions.

The CBMWU, therefore, suggested that a consultative meeting between government, employers’ associations and stake holders should be convened to address the matter.
Mr Pius Kweku Quainoo, General Secretary of the Union, made the appeal through the Ghana News Agency in Accra on Friday.

He alleged that some construction companies in the country were preventing their workers from forming trade unions, rejected basic occupational and safety standards, unwilling to pay the minimum national wage and disallowing industrial democracy.
Mr Quainoo called for sanctions against any company  that would violate rules of the International Labour Organization convention that seeks good working condition for workers.
Mr Quainoo said the CBMWU is prepared to co-operate with employers to guarantee the economic and social rights of workers through dialogue.
