Mine builds six computer laboratories for Sefwi schools

Subri, (W/R) June 28, GNA – Chirano Gold Mines has completed six computer laboratories at a cost  of $230,000.00 for six schools in the Sefwi area in support  of the government’s effort towards promoting Information and Communication Technology (ICT) education.
        Three of the beneficiary schools are located in Akoti, Etwebo and Paboase in the Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai District and the remaining at Subri, Anyinasie and Kusukumso in the Sefwi-Wiawso District.
        Two teachers from each of these schools have also been selected to undergo ICT training to build their capacity for effective teaching of the subject.
        Mr John Seaward, the General Manager of the Mines, said at a ceremony to inaugurate the laboratories that their goal was to ensure that the youth in the mining operation area were not left behind by globalization.
       He said: “Our core value is to put the people first and in keeping with this, we would do everything to help nurture and prepare, especially the young people for higher education.”  
       He said with the provision of the facilities, the expectation was that the students would score high grades in ICT in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
      Mr Samuel Nyarko, Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai District Education Director, said the well-equipped facilities could not have come at a better time and expressed confidence that they would enhance the teaching and learning of ICT in the schools.
      He cautioned the teachers and students to make sure that these were not used for playing computer games, music and watching of movies.
      His Sefwi-Wiawso counterpart, Nana Kwadwo Atrama Afful, said he was hopeful that the Mines would continue to support the development of education in the area.
      The Mines has performed another ceremony for work to start on two classroom blocks at New Obrayeko and Akoti.
     These are part of the five school projects and two clinics it has lined up for construction at a total cost of $600,000.00 as part of its social responsibility.
