AFAG urges Police to stop hounding the press

Accra, June 22, GNA- The Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG), has urged the Ghana Police Service to halt the hounding of journalists with immediate effect.

“It is public knowledge that following the publication of the police statement of Mr Alfred Agbesi Woyome by the Crusading Guide and Daily Guide, the police have failed to make public, the actions taken to reprimand all those involved.”

A statement signed by William Agyei, Member of AFAG and copied to the Ghana News Agency on Thursday said the Police have continuously demonstrated that it is bent on verifying the source of the statement by going after the editors of the newspapers as opposed to focusing on the substance of the issue.

It said AFAG sees a direct relationship on the conduct of the journalists in question, with the leadership paralysis the nation is saddled with in dealing decisively with the Woyome saga.

“When leadership fails to act decisively, to safeguard the interests of the people, well meaning citizens in the interest of the State are bound to adopt or deploy other means available to them to safeguard those interests.

“The conduct of the journalists should therefore be interpreted as such, “it added.

AFAG believed that the loss of more than GH₵50million is a matter which should not be toyed with and that the police should be professional in discharging its constitutional duties to the citizenry on whose behalf they work.
